WAEC Syllabus for English Language 2022/2023 Session (SCOPE OF EXAMINATION)

Papers 1, 2, and 3 are the three papers that will be presented. Papers 1 and 2 will be taken together as a composite paper in one sitting.

The first paper will consist of a multiple-choice objective test. It will include fifty questions, which will be allocated as follows:

Twenty questions on general literature knowledge; five questions on a previously unknown prose passage; five questions on a previously unseen poem; and twenty context questions on the required Shakespearean work.
Candidates will have one hour to answer all of the questions for a total of 50 points.

Sections A and B of Paper 2 will be an essay test with two sections. Section A will focus on African poetry, whereas Section B will focus on non-African poetry.

Each of the novels assigned for study will have two essay questions. Candidates will have 1 hour 15 minutes to answer one question from each area for a total of 50 points.

The Drama and Poetry sections of the syllabus will be covered in Paper 3. It will be divided into four sections: Sections A, B, C, and D:

  • African Drama (section A)
  • Non-African Drama (Section B)
  • African Poetry (Section C)
  • Non-African Poetry (Section D)

For Sections A and B, there will be two questions on each of the necessary drama works. Each of the poetry portions, Sections C and D, will also have two questions.

Candidates must answer one question from each of the four sections, for a total of four questions. The exam will last 2 hours and 30 minutes and will be worth 100 points.


I For Paper 1, the Unseen Prose excerpt should be between 120 and 150 words length.

(ii) Only context questions on the Shakespearean text are permitted. The context questions will assess the Shakespearean text’s theme, characters, style, and setting.
